I’ve seen LOT of hype over the last few days bouncing around the internet, with GoPro announcing a new camera, that is set to once again change the way we look at action/POV photography.
The specs of this new camera are nothing but impressive, you can see them below for yourself, I believe they have definitely started closing the gap between professional gear and gear us regular punters can afford.
Anyone who knows me, knows that I am not a big fan of the amount of crap video you see online, produced with these clever little cameras. Seems like every time I look at my Facebook News Feed there is another 5-10 minute long boring video some dude has produced to get his own ego stroked (to top things of the soundtracks suck too).
The GoPro Hero 3 on the other hand still really appeals to me, because of its ability to produce really fast high quality still shots! You can have the video rolling at 15fps 4k cinematic video and pull great quality stills or select burst and take 30fps at 12mp.
Another great feature is the built-in wifi, now I don’t have to wait to plug the camera into my computer to see if my mount was shooting at the right angle. I can quickly grab my iPhone and check the angles then hit record.
But it’s not all great, there is a few annoying things with the new camera that I have picked up on having not trialed the camera. It is clear that reducing the size of the new GoPro is really important to GoPro. That being said, this means that not all of the old housings you have will work with the new camera. Second thing is they have changed memory card formats from standard sd to micro sd. I don’t know about you, but the majority of my cameras run on standard sd cards (or CF) and after buying the last GoPro, I spent bulk money on buying 100s of gigabytes of fast memory. All these extra costs makes the new GoPro a lot more expensive then the initial $399US cost (And no doubt the cameras will be repriced at a nice high premium for the australian market).
