Early Tuesday Morning last week I ventured north in search of some waves and to catch up with my wingman who has been missing in action for way too long.
After a long drive and the sun still to rise I thought breakfast was in order, but after downing a potato Pie, 2 donuts and a large coffee just as the sun peeked over the horizon, i was having second thoughts about my choice.
As I had the whole day I was in no hurry to paddle out just anywhere, so spent some time scoping out a few spots and taking some photos before “Doggy” decided that Little Avalon was the go – No one out…….yeah that’s because it was closing out.
It was really nice having my pulse beat at around the high 190’s the entire surf while I dodged close out sets and a dry reef takeoff, but when you got one that reeled down the reef, it was well worth it.
It just sucked that the small ones lined up nice, but you then had to contend with clean up sets getting back out.
Doggy had his GoPro attached to the front of his board, but unfortunately not much footage is really worth viewing apart from a fish swimming passed on a duckdive, and me getting caught inside on the flats as a set explodes on me. (Check the 6th photo below to spot me crapping myself) I have tried to grab some stills from it but they are slightly out of focus and the waves look very small, which is just part and parcel of the GoPro I guess. I think we might try the wrist strap next.
We also scored Palm Beach wedges and Newport Reef arvo session, followed by a Steak at Newport Arms. All in all a great day surfing.
Check out a few screen captures from the Go Pro.
